The majority of people still think of the purely physical process of menstruation when they hear the term menstruation. Female menstruation is a topic that is more culturally charged than almost any other. In her work, Contreras wants to make this made and changeable nature of a term visible within cultural symbol systems - and illuminate alternative paths of interpretation.

A central question in the work of Jatun Risba is: How can people and other life forms on Earth come into contact? Can technology help us in fostering a deeper connection with the environment, unveiling multispecies interdependence and reciprocity? In the interview, they explain what this means for their approach to the theme of blood and what surprising similarities there are between human hemoglobin and plant chlorophyll.

Jatun Risba deals with the topic of menstruation as part of their Akademie Hallein residency. Jatun’s art research is informed by their lived experience of radical self-healing from Multiple Sclerosis that is entangled (also) with their return to “bleeding”. This episode inspired their intensive examination of “life mattering”, an art research started back in 2019, that approaches blood, chlorophyll and carbon as "vital substances" that allow and support the manifestation of life on Earth.

It is Jatun Risba's first time at Schmiede Hallein. What particularly impresses them is the cross-pollination and intermingling with creative people and artists from all over the world. This often results in new, unforeseeable collaborations that extend far beyond the period of the residency.

Thomas Grusch

Thomas Grusch is a long time Smith, Schmiede Hallein participant. His Schmiede, his approach as well as projects have changed multiple times in the past years as he lived through different phases of his life. He and his family are a prime example of how Schmiede can be a space that accommodates very heterogeneous needs. Thomas participated as a musician, filmmaker and father to create as well as to reflect, alone, with his family and or other Smiths. This year he participates as a first time artist in residence and author for the YnselBook.

Thomas Grusch has been coming to the Schmiede with his family for several years. He wants to prove that it is also possible to realize oneself artistically and creatively also with children. The annual theme of blood offers an exciting opportunity for this. How do you talk to children about heavier topics? How do you talk to your daughter about something you have no experience with?
