Slowness has always been at the heart of Monique’s work, becoming even more important when she began to use walking as her main artistic medium. Her long distance journeys are a way to connect with and collect stories from people on the road. She always wears and transforms a business suit on her walks as a critique of capitalism.

The Schmiede24 theme gave Monique Besten the impulse to „start“ the Bureau of Slow Endeavours (BurSE): a new long-term artistic research project on slow ways of being, focusing on collaboration, creation, and education. Her mobile lab is a synergy between humans and symbiotic cultures.

Beate Ronacher is involved in several ways at the Schmiede 2024. On the one hand, she is showing a series of works in the Hallein art space Pro Arte. On the site of "Alte Saline", she is working on an exhibition of her paintings and sculptures. And then, of course, a text is being created for the YslandBook.

What is work? What does it mean to be productive? And what is the relationship between the two when it comes to art? The Schmiede's motto "Sloth" inspired Beate Ronacher to take part in the residency and led her to engage with these questions.
